LOCATED ON THE SW CORNER OF SANSOME AND
MERCHANT STREETS, CUDDY AND HUGHES PRINTED THE
PACIFIC APPEAL, AN AFRICAN AMERICAN NEWSPAPER
THAT SERVED FOR MANY YEARS AS THE OFFICIAL
IMPERIAL GAZETTE OF NORTON 1, EMPEROR OF THE
UNITED STATES AND PROTECTOR OF MEXICO. CUDDY AND
HUGHES WAS ALSO ONE OF THE PRINTERS OF THE
IMPERIAL TREASURY BOND CERTIFICATES. THE EMPEROR
USED THE BONDS TO PAY FOR GOODS AND SERVICES,
AND SOLD THEM TO HIS LOYAL SUBJECTS IN ORDER TO
RAISE FUNDS FOR HIS MANY IMPORTANT GOVERNMENTAL
ACTIVITIES.
