The Berkeley City Council began seeking funding for a bicycle/pedestrian bridge over the
freeway in 1993 and approved the final design in 2000. This Overcrossing uses a graceful arch
span to link the historic Berkeley Shoreline and Marina, and was the 1st of a new generation of
accessible pathways to inspire and welcome pedestrians, wheelchair and bicycle users. The
I-80 Bicycle/Pedestrian Overcrossing opened in 2002 and the sculptures were installed in 2000.
