The ninth in a series of fifteen plaques unveiled to mark the Queen's diamond jubilee in 2012, following the history of Bournemouth through the ages using monarchs' reigns and jubilees as the steps in time. This ninth one relates to the reign of Edward VII (i.e. 1901-1910). Cliff erosion is halted by the construction of the Undercliff Drive and promenades. The zig-zag paths are also built and the cliff lifts (SZ0890 : Bournemouth: West Cliff Lift and SZ0990 : Bournemouth: East Cliff lift) are opened in 1908. Mr & Mrs Russell-Cotes leave their art collection to the town; this will become the SZ0990 : Bournemouth: Russell-Cotes Arts Gallery and Museum. And the first tramways are laid during this decade, having been first talked about in 1881. See SZ0890 : Bournemouth: Diamond Jubilee Plaques for the introductory plaque, and SZ0890 : Bournemouth: five of the Diamond Jubilee Plaques for an overall view of five of the plaques, providing some context. See SZ0890 : Bournemouth: Diamond Jubilee Plaque (8) for the previous plaque in the series, and SZ0890 : Bournemouth: Diamond Jubilee Plaque (10) for the next one.
