Frederic Manning, the Australian novelist and poet (1882-1935) wrote his highly acclaimed book The Middle Parts of Fortune (also published as Her Privates We) about life in the trenches during WW1 while living at the Bull Hotel (now the Burghley Arms) and although he has not merited a blue plaque from English Heritage, the town council has remedied the omission with its own tribute which was erected in 2009.
