William was a missionary who grew up in the village I lived in. I can remember my 10 year old class (in the next village of Paulerspury ) being told by the vicar that Carey had 3 degrees ( and he said we would always remember that as it sounded like the singers and he was right, thanks Mr Townsend! ).
Carey had a large impact on various parts of the world and culture as an missionary. Joseph Carey Merrick, “The Elephant Man” was named after Carey. I just found that on the Wiki page, but it would have stuck if the Vicar had told us that too !!!
The plaque is on a small bit of wall from the original cottage in a small hamlet which has a rich but mostly forgotten history.
