Wesley Reader

1911-1978

A beloved teacher, coach and administrator.  Wes Reader dedicated his life to educating the young people of Pinckney.  Born near Howell, Michigan, and educated at Western Michigan University, he arrived at the K-12 Pinckney School in 1940 as one of just eight teachers.  He taught all math and science classes.  It was said he could teach trigonometry to the least mathematically inclined.

As superintendent of Pinckney Schools for 25 years, he oversaw consolidation of the district, its growth to 85 teachers, and the building of a new high school on M-36 in 1966.  He missed the students and returned to teaching in 1968 for the last five years of his career.

A coach for more than 30 years, he coached the undefeated Pinckney High School football team and later coached the baseball team to 33 consecutive wins over three years. One basketball season, he coached the varsity, junior varsity, and girls’ basketball teams, often coaching three games in a single evening.

With no family of his own, Mr. Reader helped to raise a generation of Pinckney children.  He even spent his summers teaching young people to hunt and fish.

Highly respected for his integrity, kindness, and level-headed wisdom, he is still greatly missed after his death.
