Dedicated to
U.S. AIRMAIL PIONEERS
1918 - 1927
During the first decade of
transcontinental airmail,
pilots flew over the Alleghenies
with a fueling stop in Bellefonte.
Unpredictable weather and
changing winds cost the lives
of 34 valiant young pilots in
this most dangerous leg
of the journey -- know to
pilots as "Hell's Stretch."
