Tickfaw Missionary Baptist Church was founded in 1866 by Rev. Simon Harper, along with residents of the community. Harper, who was formerly enslaved, was also instrumental in establishing Harper Baptist College near Gloster. After meeting under a brush arbor and in homes, the congregation built a church five miles south of the Tickfaw River, from which the church takes its name. In 1926. the congregation moved to this location. This church building was completed in 1948 and remodeled in the 1980s.
