On Nov. 26, 1864, the Right Wing (15th and 17th Corps) of General Sherman´s army (USA), which had left Atlanta on Nov. 15th on its destructive March to the Sea, crossed the Oconee River at Ball´s Ferry and concentrated at Irwin´s Crossroads, 6 miles SW of Tennille in Washington County. On the 28th, the 15th Corps (Osterhaus) marched SE into Johnson County, stripping the countryside of live stock and provisions enroute.
On the night of Nov. 28th, Adams´ brigade of Corse´s division, 15th Corps, with Btry. H. 1st Mo. Art´y attached, marching on the extreme right, camped at Wrightsville. Next day, Adams rejoined Corse near Kite.
