The JERRY & MARIA MCAULEY CENTER of The Bowery Mission Jerry & Maria McAuley each experienced a radical transformation from a life of crime to a life of faith. Together, they founded the Helping Hand for Men in 1872. The Helping Hand, more popularly known as McAuley's Water Street Mission, provided a beacon of hope in New York City and a model for Christian missions across North America. Later known as New York City Rescue Mission and now part of The Bowery Mission, the vision remains the same: to be a place of hope, healing and restoration for New Yorkers in search of a helping hand.
