At this location stood one of several services stations owned by John Hardin, his wife Billie, and his brother Oscar. From 1937 to 1949, John Harden owned and managed the Black Crackers, a baseball team which was were popular with Atlanta fans. The Black Crackers were part of the Negro Leagues, established by dedicated Black sportsmen when major league ball teams refused to hire African American athletes during the era of segregation.
