A recognized international authority on banking, Walker was general manager of the Canadian Bank of Commerce from 1886 and its president, 1907-1924. His love of the arts and interest in Canadian cultural life led him to take influential roles in founding the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Royal Ontario Museum and the Champlain Society, which publishes Canadian historical documents. As Chairman of its Board of Trustees, he was instrumental in the early development of the National Gallery of Canada. Sir Edmund was knighted in 1910.
