In 1897 Queen Victoria celebrated her Diamond Jubilee, having been on the throne for sixty years. This plaque dates from that year and is inside the lychgate of St. Mary's Church Cogges, which was built the same year. The plaque has crowns in each corner with a lion nearby. It says "Victoria 60 Years Queen of Great Britain & Ireland. Empress of India". It then lists the biggest places which were at the time in the former British Empire - West Indies, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Burmah (spelt that way in Victorian times), Africa, Gibraltar, Malta, Cyprus and Egypt. Times have changed a lot since those days! SP3609 : Date inscription on lychgate at St. Mary's Church Cogges, Church Lane, Cogges, Witney, Oxon.
