Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States of America and party camped near here in a wooded area, when trying to reach Mobile, in his flight from Federal Soldiers. The party, on horseback, stopped at Warthen´s Store to purchase food supplies for man and beast and were directed to a secluded spot, on what was then known as Griffin´s Pond.
From here President Davis and his party proceeded to a point in Irwin County where they were overtaken by Union soldiers and captured.
