This plaque is to be found on a wall adjacent to the road known as The Leys and near to the public footpath which runs alongside the western side of St Mary's Church and connects The Leys and Church Green. The rather faded inscription reads: "The "Church Leys" was purchased in 1920 as a public recreation ground out of funds subscribed by the inhabitants of Witney in memory of those who gave their lives in the Great War 1914 - 1918." The recreation ground these days is known as Leys Recreation Ground. Probably few people who pass this spot realise that the recreation ground and indeed this plaque are war memorials.
