Formerly a barrio of Lumbang. Organized into a municipality, 1668. Francisco Umali, first Gobernadorcillo. Became capital of Laguna, 1688–1858. Town gate constructed, 1878–1880; inaugurated, 1984, by Don Pedro A. Paterno. Occupied by the revolutionists, 1896; by the Americans, 1899; by the Japanese, 1942. Liberated, 1945, by the Filipinos, led by Manuel Soriano.
