Jefferson Davis Used This Road While Escaping

Nation Ford Road

You are crossing over this historic road that was
once a major route for both Patriots and British
soldiers during the American Revolution.
Patriot General Thomas Sumter's men camped
on nearby Haigler's Hill on the other side
of the lake. British General Cornwallis wrote
that this land was like an English park with
its splendid trees.

In 1861 Civil War soldiers along with 19
Catawba soldiers marched up the road
headed for Virginia. Four years later
Confederate President Jefferson Davis
and his cabinet used this road while
attempting to escape Union forces.
