Alfred Cuthbert (1785 - 1856) was born in Savannah, the son of Colonel Seth John Cuthbert, brother of Congressman John Cuthbert, grandson of Revolutionary patriot Joseph Clay. A colonel of volunteer infantry, Alfred Cuthbert, after serving both Houses of the Georgia Legislature and in Congress for several terms, was a United States Senator from 1835 to 1843. He succeeded John Forsyth who was named Secretary of State by President Andrew Jackson. This house, built in the early 1800´s, was Senator Cuthbert´s home for a number of years. He died here and is buried in Summerville Cemetery in Augusta.
