Clement Anselm Evans, Brig. Gen. C.S.A., soldier, lawyer, minister, statesman & author was born 3/4 miles W. of here in 1834. Admitted to the bar at 18, elected county judge at 21, state senator at 25, he became a Brig. Gen. and was severely wounded at Monocacy River serving under Gordon who called him `that intrepid leader`. Took part in the last charge of the Army of Northern Virginia commanding Gordon`s old division and surrendered under Lee at Appomattox `with guns still hot from firing until the last hour`. Died in 1911.
