Fort Dakota

On the west side of the River was the site of Fort Dakota. Sioux Falls, initially settled in 1857, was evacuated when the “Dakota War” of 1862 in southwest Minnesota threatened the settlement and remained deserted until Fort Dakota was established in the Spring of 1865. Troops were withdrawn from the Fort in 1869 and the military reservation was opened to settlement. Richard Pettigrew and others moved into the old barracks building, near 8th and Phillips, in 1870.
