First US Post Office West of the Rockies

My wife and I just finished listening to the "Dead Letter Office" episode on our Road Trip to the old country (Canada) from LA, and I stumbled on this little parkette with a plaque right behind our B&B in Astoria, OR.  Remembering that One Must Always Read the Plaque, I found this:

Site of the First United States Post Office West of the Rocky Mountains. John M. Shiveley Appointed First Postmaster by President Polk 1847. Presented by Astoria Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, August 24, 1945.

There is no Postmaster. No building. No foundation! Maybe they've all been auctioned off at the MRC?
