June 2, 1864. The rt. of Johnston´s Dallas - New Hope line -- a short distance E. of road, was held by Bate´s Div. of Hardee´s Corps [CS] after being pressed back by Fed. 23d A. C.

June 3. Walker´s Div. of Hardee, prolonged Bate´s line N. E., endeavoring to hold the positions, but seizure of road 1.5 mi. N. E. by Hovey´s (1st) Div., 23d A. C. [US] forced Johnston to abandon his Dallas - New Hope line & withdraw E. toward the State R. R. Johnston maintained the Dallas - New Hope line during ten days of constant battle in a rugged wilderness.
