The Cascade Milling Company, built in 1877 for E.A. Sherman and other investors, was located on the east bank of the river and north of the 8th Street bridge. The Company became the first to sell electricity in the city in 1885. An electric generating plant built of quartzite was added in 1887. The City Council accepted a proposal in September, 1887, for the company to furnish 15 D.C. Arc streetlights at $10.00 per light per month. The mill was dismantled in 1914.
