BOERUM HILL HISTORIC DISTRICT
THE NAME OF THIS DISTRICT GOES BACK TO THE MID-17TH CENTURY SETTLEMENT OF THE AREA BY THE BOERUM FAMILY, WHO WERE PROSPEROUS DUTCH FARMERS IN GENERAL, THE RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT TOOK PLACE BETWEEN THE 1840'S AND THE 1870'S, AND THE MANY SURVIVING GREEK REVIVAL AND ITALIANATE HOUSES DATE FROM THAT PERIOD. IN THE MID-19TH CENTURY, BOERUM HILL WAS A FASHIONABLE DISTRICT OF ROW HOUSES. THE TASTE OF THOSE DAYS IS RECALLED IN THE ARCHITECTURAL DETAILS, SUCH AS THE FINE IRON RAILINGS AND FLUTED PORCH COLUMNS.
