May 13, 1864. Gen J. E. Johnston´s forces [CSA] withdrew from Dalton to Resaca, having been outflanked by Federal forces moving via Snake Creek Gap 7mi. N. W.

Aligned upon hills, N. & W. of here, the Confederates withstood repeated Fed. assaults for two days, May 14-15.

Federal forces, having secured a river crossing at Lay´s Ferry (near mount of snake Creek) 6 mi. S. W., Johnston withdrew S. to Calhoun, May 16. This was the 1st major battle of the campaign which ended with the capture of Atlanta.
