A Town Named Sherman
“John C. Gavin (1842-1924) arrived in Sherman after the Civil War. He was given the honorary title of ‘Mayor of Sherman’ due to the fact that he was the last year-round resident of Sherman.”
Sherman was a mining town in southwest Colorado (peak population: 300). Located in the valley of a mountain range, it was prone to flash floods and extreme snow. Eventually it became a ghost town.
