War of 1812, Pike County

During the War of 1812, General William Carroll, en route to New Orleans, marched his Tennessee Militia through Pike County, crossed the Bogue Chitto River north of Holmesville and camped along Love's Creek. While returning from New Orleans via this same route one of his men became ill, died and was buried near Love's Creek campsite. By order of the United States War Department, this soldier's remains were disinterred and reburied in the Chalmette National Cemetery in October 1908.
