Ponte Cestio

Plaque reads: 'The bridge takes its name from Lucius Cestio, governor of Rome, who built it in 26BC to link Tiber Island with the right bank of the Tiber.

Its original structure was changed when work was being done on the hydraulic settlement of the river in 1892 to widen the right branch to 80. The bridge was completely demolished and two lateral arches added to make it 83m long, as compared to the original  48.5m. Today's structure is therefore completely different from the old one, except for some of the blocks of stone used for rebuilding the central arch.

In the period of the church of San Bartolomeo, which opens onto the square on the island, there is a stone commemorating the last great flood of 1937, which submerged  the whole island under about two metres of water.'
